For all of you parents out there, I felt your pain last night. I was woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of my kitten's upchuck reflexes. Cleo was getting ready to barf all over my bed. As I, still half asleep, frantically searched for something within arm's reach to have her throw up in, she puked on my blanket. The poor little thing :( She let me pet her for a little while and then jumped off the bed like nothing happened. I cleaned up the bedding and went back to bed. She's feeling fine today, so I hope we don't have a replay of that any time soon.

New Boot Camp Date
It's official, Rich is going to Boot Camp on April 5th (hopefully). The date has changed a couple times, but we're pretty sure this is final. Rich and I are working on getting everything in order for this new stage in our life. Fun fun fun!
In other news, our kittens are adorable. They are ringworm-free and love exploring the apartment. I posted pics on Facebook, but I'll post some on here soon.

Say Hello to the Newest Members of our Family
That's right...we have twin girls. They are so adorable! Our cute little babies came home to us the Wednesday before Christmas. These little ones are the greatest Christmas present I have ever received; they sure love to cuddle. :) Here they are: Eve & Cleo (short for Cleopatra).

Richard got me these sweeties for Christmas. They're getting over from a cold and ringworm, so they'll be a lot happier when they're better. I think I got a much better present than the sweatshirt I got him. (Side note from Hubby: I love the sweatshirt. The End.)

A Fun Baby Shower
I went to my friend's baby shower tonight. And I'll be honest, I hate going to baby showers. I don't have kids, so the conversation is awkward (the moms are talking about breastfeeding & I'm waiting in dread for someone to ask me when we're planning on having kids). But the evening was really fun. We played a few games and they were fun; I didn't have to smell or eat anything. :) We just hung out, chatted, and ate yummy food. The gifts were all so cute and pink!
The kicker was when we were cleaning up the party and a firefighter walked in. (The party was at a neighborhood community center, so they can just walk right in.) Apparently one of the alarms was tripped, but we didn't hear anything; it must have been some kind of glitch because there was no fire, just a bunch of ladies. That really capped off the night nicely.

Save BYU's Women's Research Institute
"A BYU education should be (1) spiritually strengthening, (2) intellectually enlarging, and (3) character building, leading to (4) lifelong learning and service." And that is what the Women's Research Institute has promoted for the past 30+ years. The research done through this department has linked researchers across the university and has touched lives around the world. As a graduate of the Women's Studies minor, I have personally seen the work people are able to do because the Institute is present. In my senior research class, I was able to have individual time with professors that may not have been otherwise available. In this same class, we had women from varying majors, which brought more points of view to our research and broadened what we were able to do.
I'm unclear as to WHY the Women's Research Institute is being dissolved, but I would ask the University and specifically the Committee that made this decision, to reconsider. People, not just women, are upset about this decision because it is taking a piece of the university from the students that have come to BYU to study. I feel that by closing the Women's Research Institute, we are stealing from future generations; not only BYU students, but from people all over the globe that could benefit from the research done there.
If you don't want the Women's Research Institute to close, please DO something about it. Write a letter/email, call, join the Facebook group, wear a shirt or whatever you want to protest this decision. Let them know what they are taking away!

Good News
As some of you may know, Richard enlisted in the Marine Corps a few months ago, but we have been waiting to see if he got the job (Military Occupation Specialties aka MOS) that he wanted, which is a linguist. We heard from his recruiter this month and he was accepted into his MOS. We're really excited about this. Rich goes to Boot Camp in March and I'm planing on staying here for that time and then we'll see where the Marine Corps takes us.

DON'T...
eat fried dough while on the back of a motorcycle with a helmet on.
#1: You can't get the food in your mouth because the helmet is in the way.
#2: You get powdered sugar all over your helmet and yourself.
Not that I've tried that or anything. :)

Waterfront Festival
Rich & I went to the Festival at the Newburgh Waterfront yesterday. It was a nice evening so we took the motorcycle down. We walked around and saw all of the vendors and got some fair food (we had gyros...yummy!). After the gyros, we were pretty stuffed so we're thinking about going back on Monday for more food! We ran into one of Rich's friends from high school, Carolyn. She had a booth for her business, Hudson Harmony; she sells homemade jewelry and soap/bath stuff. I bought a bar of the Joyfully soap and it makes the bathroom smell so nice!
I'm not sure what we're up to on Monday, so if you're gonna be around tomorrow, hit us up. :) Happy Labor Day!

Off to Camp
I'm going to Girls' Camp for the next couple days. When I come back, hopefully I will start blogging again. A thousand apologizes for being a bad blogger; I will explain in upcoming posts.

In case there was ever any question...
I am definitely my father's daughter. Duh! Well, today as I was pulling my hair back, I found 3 indisputable gray/white hairs. My father started graying young and I'm following in his footsteps. :) Sorry no pics; the glare from my shiny hair makes all of the pictures a ball of light. But trust me, they are there! I've seen white hairs before, but Rich tried to convince me that they were just "really blond strands". But the ones I spotted today are without a doubt white/gray. So what does my blogging audience think that I should do? Start dying my hair or live & let live?

In Saturday, I cleaned up my beauty and bath stuff. Mostly I got rid of dried up lipstick and expired body scrubs. One of the other tasks that I needed to do was check each of my nail polish bottles to see if it was still good (not crusty or clumpy, etc). In order to check that I painted each nail, which I had polished pink earlier this week. I think they look nice :) What are you thoughts? LOL. My young women at church had a good laugh; I hope you do, too.

A little piece of Utah...
Earlier this week, Rich & I were able to meet up with Andrew. He came out to New York for a business trip and we were able to steal him away for dinner one night. We were sad that Chelsey & Truman weren't there, but Andrew said that he ate his meal in honor of them. Here's the three of us at dinner:

After dinner, we took Andrew to see our apartment, which he pointed out had a living room that would be an awesome place to play Hand & Foot because it is so spacious (it's the only spacious part of the whole apartment). It was really great to see Andrew. And this is a good example for our blogging buddies, if you're in the New York area, give us a call because we would love to see you.

Snow Day
Today's weather is too outrageous to travel to work in, so Rich & I took the day off. Snow + Ice + Rain = Crappy Travel Weather. Jealous doesn't begin to express how I feel about my parents, who are currently enjoying the sunny weather in Hawaii. :) I hope they're having a good time. Also, I hope you guys are having nicer weather than we are or maybe you like the snow. I'm not one of those snow people. I prefer sunny California year-round to a hot summer and a frozen winter. Whatever you're weather you're having, have a great day!

New Template...Lost Info :(
Hello all you blogging buddies! I decided to update the blog for Valentine's Day. Every time I do that I lose all of my widgets (I love that word; widget widget widget). Anyways, if your blog isn't on my list, please comment and I'll add it back. Trust me, it's nothing personal, I just can't stop it from deleting my blogroll...grrrrrrr.
Things are good. Richard and I are working most of the time. The rest of the time we're hanging out together. Rich has been pretty busy the past week or so because the Elders Quorum President got married and then moved away the same week. Since Rich is the first counselor, he's picking up the slack until a new EQP is called. Church was snowed out today, so we had a quiet Sunday together.
Last week in Young Women's, we made homemade face masks out of oatmeal, bananas, cucumbers, etc. The girls tried it out on themselves and each other. It was a good time. :)

Seriously, folks.....
So, this is my first post on this wonderful blog. That's right... it's Hubby. Hello to all those who faithfully read Wifey's blog. We miss you all and love you very much. Right about now you might be wondering what in the world could possibly get me to post on this great blog... Well, I'll tell you. Quick disclaimer though: the opinions presented in this post are mine, and in no way reflect those of the main author (I know it's Richard AND Gretchen, but let's face it.... This is really her blog). That being said, here we go:
Last week, we went to Gamestop in the mall by us to exchange a video game we got for Christmas (Fable 2, very good game so far btw). While we were standing in the HORRENDOUSLY long line, I noticed a little boy just ahead of us. He might have been 7 or 8, 9 at the oldest. I think the woman with him was actually his older sister, but it may very well have been his mother. The two of them were looking at the games he wanted to buy. The first was called Grand Theft Auto 4, and the second was a game called Manhunt.
You may have heard about the Grand Theft Auto game. It is very violent. You can solicit strippers and prostitutes for their services. You can carjack as you please, kill cops, innocent people, and otherwise wreak havoc on anything or anyone. Needless to say, it is pretty popular with the teenage crowd. Rated M for Mature.
Now, Manhunt you probably have not heard about. They recently made a sequel that was banned in several countries, and was given an Adults Only rating when it initially went to the ESRB. I guess they toned it down a little to just get it a Mature rating to actually try and sell some copies. Anyways the premise is this: you are captured and held against your will, and the object of the game is to kill the people who are holding you hostage. Or anyone else who gets in your way. The kicker is you use anything you can get your hands on; piano wire, broken glass, guns, knives, chainsaws, ice picks.... you get the picture. Think of it this way. The only way to make the sequel better than the first was to make it so violent they had to give it an Adults Only rating. (Do you understand how violent a game has to be to get an AO rating?!?!)
I'm all for freedom of speech. I play plenty of violent video games myself. So, why am I blogging about this? Let's jump back a paragraph or two. We were talking about an 8 year old. An 8 year old whose "guardian" bought these games for this kid. Are you frickin kidding me?!?! I even listened as he explained a little about the games. All I kept hearing was "cool" and "awesome." I thought about a previous experience a few months earlier when I saw an even younger kid throw a temper tantrum when his mother didn't want to buy him the new Grand Theft Auto game. She eventually caved and got it for him. I've seen other parents go in and buy the game for their kids without even asking a question. It's just a video game, right?
Here's the kicker: All you need is someone 18 or older to get the game for you. Friend, family or otherwise, there are no questions asked if the person is 18 or older. Another funny little fact is a 16 year old employee at Gamestop cannot sell an M rated game. They need someone 18 or older for that one too.
Can we get a little education here, folks? Would it hurt to tell a mother about the game she's going to buy her kid? Would it hurt to say " Ma'am (no one says Ma'am anymore), did you know that there is explicit, graphic violence in this game? It might be a little inappropriate for Junior there." She might even say "What kind of violence are we talking about?" Then the guy might say "Well, there is a gun in the game that has a chainsaw on it. Players can use it to cut their opponents in half. Blood splashes on the screen, and the imagery is very realistic."
What would be the worst thing that could happen? The mother might say "I had no idea. I don't think I want Junior to eviscerate his friends online with chainsaws. He's too young for that. That's INAPPROPRIATE for his age." (We don't really use that word to often anymore. In the Church we do. Not out in the world though). If Gamestop did inform parents about the games that they were buying for their kids, I would imagine they wouldn't buy the games. Some might. And of course, I am assuming its the parents who are buying the games for these kids.
So, therefore what? What is the point to all this ranting? Education. Education and Ignorance. Be educated. Don't be ignorant. Oh, and if I see you in line at Gamestop buying an M rated game for a kid that looks younger than 25, I'm gonna say something to you. I don't care if your kid throws a tantrum...

Christmas Eve
One of the Christmas Eve traditions in my family is for the kids to pick a cereal on Christmas Eve that we eat on Christmas morning. It's cool because when we were growing up, the Muum didn't buy cereal with more than 10 grams of sugar per serving, so on Christmas Eve, we could get whatever sugary goodness that we wanted. The catch is that 5 kids have to agree on 1 box of cereal. There is always bargaining, fighting, and yelling, but we can't leave the store with more than 1 box of cereal. Rich & I went out on Christmas Eve to drop off some gifts and pick up our Christmas cereal. By the time we finished visiting our friends, the only store open was the convenience store (even WalMart and McDonald's were closed). We went in the store to see what cereal options they had and it was a pretty grim selection: Cheerios, Fruit Loops, Frosted Flakes, and Raisin Bran. We opted to pick up the cereal another day (we're going to have it for New Year's).
After the cereal debacle, we were hungry for some dinner so we looked for a place to eat. As previously mentioned, McDonald's and every other fast food place was closed. All of the restaurants looked like they had been shut down for hours. Our remaining choices were Chinese food or the Jamaican fried chicken place. We decided to go for the Chinese and it was delicious.
When we got home and finished eating our feast, I realized that I still hadn't made any cookies for Santa. And being a bit giddy we decided to give Santa our fortune cookies from the Chinese place. I don't think Santa minded too much; he still left us some nice presents.

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and will have a safe and happy New Year's.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree
Rich and I bought our first full-sized real Christmas tree this year. We got a real tree our first Christmas together, but it was a potted tree that died (sad). We went out to the tree farm that Rich went to as a kid and we picked out a nice one. We named him Tany-B (like tannenbaum). Sadly, he will only be with our family about a month, but we will enjoy every moment. Especially those moments that we are vacuuming up his pine needles. We're excited to decorate him sometime this week.
Here we are with the tree loaded on the car:

It's Christmas Time!!!
I went to the grocery store tonight and saw the holiday decorations and treats. But I knew that it's Christmas when I saw the Peppermint Ice Cream; it's The Sassy Lime's favorite! She could probably polish off a half gallon in a sitting. :)

The One Thing I Hate About New York...
BRIDGES!!! The other day, I went to the store pick up some stuff and I decided to take a different way home. I usually take the back-roads, but I took the freeway because I wanted to try a faster way. I've gone that way before, but on my way home I thought there were two exits and I needed to take the second, but that is on the other side of the freeway. I missed the last exit before the bridge. I screamed as I realized this, drove across the bridge, paid the toll (thankfully it was only $1), and drove back home a little embarrassed. Hopefully, I'll get the hang of it soon. :)

Fall Is Here...And It's Beautiful!
I got up this morning and went to church earlier than usual because I had a meeting and I was greeted by the following:

Since I've been living in Utah for so long I have been deprived of the beautiful fall colors; I could only see them from afar on the mountains. But to see them up close and personal this morning, I was so happy. I hope you guys are also having a wonderful fall season.
